Put the Kettle On: We’re Brewing Up with Cammy

Our hands on fitter who keeps us all smiling

The Sign Print Identity team has grown fast since we began trading in 2024.

As we continue to introduce you to our brilliant team, it’s the turn of Cammy, one of our brilliant sign fitters. We’ve taken five minutes out of the day for a brew with him.

How do you help oil the SPI machine?

That’s a nice easy one to start with – I’m a fitter, so I fit signs!

Is it just signs?

Technically, yes, but the world of signs is more varied than you could have imagined – if you ever do spend your time imagining signage!

From standing 6m high in an access machine/cherry picker installing a totem, to fixing window vinyls, and everything in between.

How did you get into this line of work?

I’ve always been a practical, hands on guy.

Before my time at SPI I was an operations manager at Tiger Tiger, so was in charge of keeping the premises safe and in top condition, dealing with repairs, general upkeep and improvements. So I can apply myself to pretty much whatever practical task needs sorting.

What do you like most about your work?

Working with Joe and Joe, of course…

It’s OK, no one is twisting your arm, Cammy…

Well, OK then, I like driving the access machine. That’s the cherry picker to those not in the business.

And I love building scaffolds. There’s a real satisfaction of finishing a day’s work and being able to step back and see what you’ve created with your bare hands.

We do have a good laugh, too, the team on site.

What’s the trickiest bit about the job?

Probably the weather. If you’re up high working on a totem installation the weather does play a huge part in things. If it’s too windy or raining too heavily we’ve got to put safety first and down tools.

Most impressive mileage you’ve logged on a job?

It’s got to be our work with Arnold Clark.

I’ve just clocked 1,000 miles in three days, travelling from Manchester to Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen, Perth and Newcastle installing some temporary signs for the client.

Pretty mad.

What keeps you busy in your spare time?

I play snooker – that’s a new hobby of mine – and there’s the football of course.

My wife and I love camping, especially in Scotland, so we do get away walking whenever we can.
